After the Minnesota Senate passed a gay marriage bill, the state’s governor is scheduled to sign the measure into law on Tuesday, allowing same-sex couples to legally tie the knot.

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton has signed a bill that legalizes gay marriage, making the state the 12th to do so.

The Minnesota Senate has voted to legalize gay marriage, putting the state on the brink of becoming the 12th to allow same-sex couples to marry.

Minnesota’s Senate was scheduled to open debate at noon on a bill that would make Minnesota the 12th state to legalize gay marriage and the first to pass such a measure out of its Legislature. Iowa allows gay weddings due to a court ruling.

A pivotal vote Thursday in the Minnesota House positioned that state to become the 12th in the country to allow gay marriages and the first in the Midwest to pass such a law out of its Legislature.

The Minnesota House stood ready to vote to make the state the 12th to legalize gay marriage Thursday, as rallies planned for and against the measure prompted heightened security at the Capitol.

Minnesota appears poised to legalize gay marriage, as the Democratic speaker of the state House said Tuesday that a gay marriage bill endorsed by the governor and likely to pass in the state Senate also now has enough backing in his chamber.

With the a vote planned in the House, the Minnesota State Senate has announced that it will vote on a gay marriage bill on Monday if the House passes the bill.

Now that all of New England (and then some) has legalized gay marriage, it appears as though support for marriage equality is picking up steam in the Midwest, with Minnesota and Illinois poised to be the next states to recognize same-sex marriage.
