Police arrested nine protestors who dressed as bagels outside Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s annual World AIDS Day breakfast in Brooklyn on Wednesday, Dec. 1.

The case of an Atlanta activist who became homeless after the friend with whom he was living moved away, proposed budget cuts in New York City and ongoing struggles over what constitutes affordable in California all illustrate the problem of a lack of adequate housing for people with HIV/AIDS around the country.

More than 50 New York-based activists are expected to join their Haitian counterparts in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza on Manhattan’s East Side on Wednesday, March 31, to protest what they maintain is a lack of a coordinated relief effort for people with HIV/AIDS in the earthquake ravaged country.

Charles King, president and chief executive officer of Housing Works, has made three trips to Haiti since an earthquake killed an estimated 250,000 people on Jan. 12; Dr. Vaty Poitevian, the group’s medical director who was born in Port-au-Prince, lost her parents in the disaster when their home collapsed.

The San Francisco-based Rainbow World Fund has already donated $50,000, while Housing Works and gay promoters in New York and elsewhere have raised money to support the Haiti earthquake relief effort.
