Darin Brooks goes to college (and gets raunchy) on Blue Mountain State
While gay viewers may not immediately think of the testosterone-driven Spike network as a regular stop on their remote control, recently the network launches a scripted Animal House-like comedy series called Blue Mountain State, which focuses on a group of freshman college football players maneuvering their way through not only playing college football but also the ins and outs of the bedroom.
In the pilot alone, there are scenes of the guys going through a hazing initiation and having to shave each other’s bodies, a three-way (one guy with two girls) and more than a few "that’s so gay" phrases thrown around. Star Darin Brooks, who has spent the last four years making hearts flutter as Max Brady on NBC’s Days Of Our Lives, said that the show is probably going to offend more than a few people.
The Emmy winner (he won for Best Younger Actor on Days in 2009) went on to talk about how he told his family about his role in the raunchy new series as well as how his time in daytime television worked to his benefit with jobs beyond soaps.
Raunchy moments?
EDGE: Did you have your own college experience to draw from for your role on Blue Mountain State?
Darin Brooks: I think for a couple of us it’s our college experience. I didn’t really go to college. I went for a semester and a half and then I just decided to move to LA and become an actor. I didn’t tell my parents at first but it worked out. The four of us [in the BMS cast] had our little frat house that we had going and it was kind of a fun time.
slug> DGE: The show has its share of raunchy moments, but how different was that for you to play after spending several years as a good guy on a daytime soap.
DB: I had done comedy in my acting classes and stuff like that, this is different. We kind of just jumped in and had a good time with it. We all meshed and just kind of played off each other really well and it fell into place right now as we were building it.
EDGE: How have you told your friends and family to be prepared for a bit more adult humor with this show?
DB: Well, I think some of my family is going to like it and some of them will never ask me to Christmas dinner again. [laughs] I think they’re going to enjoy it and it can be a little raunchy at times and I have warned my family. I’ve found that some of them can’t wait and others are like "Well, maybe I’ll watch it for a little bit..."
EDGE: I don’t remember a show where I’ve seen more skin with the guys. Shower scenes, running across the football field in jocks...are you comfortable taking off your clothes?
DB: You know what, I’m game for it. It’s all for the show and it’s all for good fun. The whole cast gets along so well. Behind the scenes most of us in the cast got into a lot of competition and who would go so far at doing things and this and that. We’d make wagers to see who would go the furthest. A lot of us were just doing crazy things and we just had a fun time doing it.
