Bay Area native Derek Jameson has everything going his way right now, and much more to look forward to in his future. Once living in San Jose, it is hard to believe Jameson hasn’t always seen things as nice and rosy. Now calling Los Angeles home, the singer/songwriter credits music for pulling him from the depths of despair into an outlook for life and inspiration.

Starting the Year of the Rabbit with the release of a new album called The Invention of Love, Jameson gives you a sense of how he has constructed his current road of happiness with the title of his new work. Currently working on a tour package, I interrupted his preparation on the set of a No H8 PSA with photographer Adam Bouska and the message from Lady GaGa’s "Born This Way" single to talk to him about his new album, what inspires him, and the struggles in his past.

Working through your own stuff

BeBe: Congratulations to you on your latest collection of music The Invention of Love that you released earlier this year. I’m sure you are very excited and pleased with it.

Derek: Thank you very much. It’s going very well.

BeBe: Now, I love the video to "Ribcage," your first single off the album. It shows you as a boxer or a fighter’s workout scene. Do you see finding true love as a big fight or what was the concept behind the video?

Derek: The song "Ribcage" is about your heart beating so hard and it deals with rhythms as well. The reason I played on those rhythms and the heartbeat was the inspiration behind it was a choreographer/dancer. It’s about the struggles we put ourselves through, but we personally like it. Even though we don’t get what we want, even though it may not be the best for us or as healthy as it should be, we still put ourselves through it because we kind of like it. It’s the romanticism of it for some reason. So with the video, it’s kind of dealing with your own stuff, fighting yourself, being alone, working through it. It’s about battling yourself. That’s why no one else is in he video.

BeBe: I noticed you looking in the mirror a lot and sparring with yourself. I got that.

Derek: Right.
