Kate Beckinsale returns to the role that synched her action-star credibility a decade ago in "Underworld: Awakening," the fourth installment in the vampire film franchise. But now Selene, Beckinsale’s kick-ass alter-ego, finds her limits pushed into uncharted territory when the war between Vampire and the werewolf arch-enemies, the Lycans comes out of the shadows.
Desperate to prevent their own extinction at the hands of the "non-humans", man has become aware of the predatory infestation in his midst and has taken measures to "purge" the world of this threat. Twelve years in a deep freeze has taken its toll on Selene, who awakens to find that her lover, the only existing vampire/Lycan hybrid is gone...and the daughter she never knew she had may hold the key to the next evolution.
Still every bit as atmospheric and brooding as its predecessors even though much of "Underworld: Awakening" is rooted in the "real world", it jars in contrast to the gothic mythology Selene’s Death Dealer’s brand of justice, without compromising the depths of action and violence. The real menace in this installment is a script that’s a bit thin, but full of foreshadowing as this is clearly a reboot of this winning franchise.
It clearly makes the distinction of establishing itself as a new chapter in the series, revealing deeply rooted conspiracies and a plan by the Lycans to use "Subject 2" Selene’s daughter to harvest the genetic material that will make them unstoppable.
There’s no sleep tonight! "Underworld: Awakening" is as fierce and ferocious as Selene’s slinky leather fashion sense. With behind the scenes featurettes that reveal more of the movie’s steeped mythology and clues to the next possible chapter in the series, this disc played in either its 3D or 2D format is an action-feast able to curb either a wolf’s or bat’s appetite!
