Sucker Punch

Tim Parks READ TIME: 1 MIN.

"Sucker Punch: Extended Cut" has a visual flare that is summarized by its title, coupled with the fact that it was helmed by Zack Snyder, the director of the "do-you-like-movies-about-gladiators?" opus "300" and the gritty superhero epic "Watchmen."

With that being said, the bar is set high to enjoy this tale of Babydoll (Emily Browning), Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), Amber (Jamie Chung) and Rocket (Jena Malone), a quintet of young women locked away at the Lennox House for the Mentally Insane, after suffering various forms of abuse and using flights of imagination to escape their fate.

This is a fitting scenario for the movie, which at times is both relentless with its violence-against-women angle that is harder to break free from than the cinematic institution, and equally plodding in its molasses-isn't-even-this-slow storytelling.

The Blu-ray boasts an extra 17 minutes of footage not shown in movie theaters, so if you're a glutton for punishment, this is the route to go; as well as a "Maximum Movie Mode," a special feature-length inside look at the "Sucker Punch" fantasy world, you know the one where the movie would have been a welcome addition to the film genre of "Chicks Who Kick Butt." As it stands, or rather falls short, this one could be rated "T" for "There Goes Two Hours I'll Never Get Back!"
